Tom Homan as New “Border Czar” to Lead Immigration and Border Security Efforts
In a major move to fulfill his campaign promises on border security, President-elect Donald Trump has announced that Tom Homan, former acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), will serve as his administration’s “border czar.” This position will oversee U.S.-Mexico border operations, maritime and aviation security, and deportations of undocumented immigrants.

Trump made the announcement on Truth Social, expressing his confidence in Homan’s ability to lead this ambitious agenda. “Former ICE Director and stalwart on Border Control, Tom Homan, will be in charge of our Nation’s Borders,” Trump wrote, emphasizing Homan’s expertise and commitment to tightening immigration enforcement.
Homan’s Previous Experience
Homan, a tough-talking former Border Patrol agent, previously led ICE in 2017-2018 and is known for a no-nonsense approach to immigration. During a speech at the National Conservatism Conference, he promised to prioritize national security threats but warned, “If you’re here illegally, you better be looking over your shoulder.” While Homan has called for targeted deportations focusing initially on those posing public safety risks, he’s made it clear that the government will consider all undocumented individuals in enforcement efforts.
As “border czar,” Homan aims to execute Trump’s immigration strategy “in a humane manner,” emphasizing ICE’s well-practiced deportation operations. Addressing public concern over family separations, Homan assured that “families can be deported together,” though he has defended worksite enforcement as necessary, a measure largely halted during the Biden administration.

Homan’s Experience
Homan’s experience, along with his advocacy for a comprehensive government approach to border security, distinguishes him from other immigration hardliners. Trump’s choice reflects his intent to deliver on hardline immigration policies, with Homan’s background expected to navigate the complex logistics and diplomatic challenges, such as the requirement for other nations to accept deportees, which complicates mass deportation efforts.
Homan has been a prominent figure on immigration enforcement for decades, from his start in Border Patrol in 1984 to his leadership at ICE under both the Obama and Trump administrations. His policies during the Trump administration led to a surge in deportation arrests and the implementation of the zero-tolerance policy, which sparked controversy over family separations at the border.
Since leaving ICE, Homan has continued to advocate for strict immigration measures, including writing a book, Defend the Border and Save Lives, and frequently appearing on Fox News. With his reappointment, Homan’s role as border czar is anticipated to be central in Trump’s renewed efforts to tackle border security and immigration enforcement head-on.
